Live from the Quadrant 26-10-2007

The Snowman lectures on postgraduate psychology
Fight sports in New Zealand seldom have the tense aggro atmosphere; you are so used to seeing elsewhere. Today was no different as Hextreme events held there press conference, at the plush new Quadrant hotel at the Waterloo in Auckland CBD. It was more the case of the media and fighters, along with a “Snowman” cramming into a square room as opposed to a hexagon. It was a real friendly environment, and good taste as opposed to trash talking and pre-fight jibes. Jeff Monson, who cut an impressive figure along with some very eager Kiwi MMA’ists weighed in to match weights, for what could be the continuation of a new era started down in Wellington, if not bigger and better.

The under card is packed with largely amateur talent varying from disciples of Jiu Jitsu to Kick Boxing, with the probable star who could shoot himself to orbit being “Grave Digger” Daniel Digby. Being a builder by trade he could very well build a “coffin”, dig-bury and dust his American opponent. The soft spoken Napier man, was quietly confident but acknowledged that this will be one very big hole he has to dig. Felise “DA FOB-Father” Lenui stared up a larger than life giant in Reuben De Jong who weighed in at a light 120 Kg!. This is a battle worth savouring and Felise will no doubt come out hard at the big man, just like the Pit Bull terrier who stunned Peter Sampson at the last KO event in Auckland.

And the look of love III continues: starring The Giant and DA FOB-Father

Flights being delayed due to bad weather in the South Island saw, the iconic T-Rex of NZ Fight scene, Hiriwa TeRangi arrive a tad or so late, tipping the scales much heavier than his rival Kaota Puna, who is a master of submissions. The Tee-Man sporting a trademark hair cut, like that of the Matrix looked a modernised, heavyweight image of Che Guvera the Cuban revolutionary. Puna will have his hands full with a more experienced and versatile fighter in the Tee-man, who looked relaxed and joked around as usual. “I was in my cold gears this morning, because of the terrible weather down in Gore- but what do you know it’s sunny up here and I think I lost a kilo!” quipped TeRangi, who is always the media’s darling. Most fighters and trainers can learn from this ambassador for the fighting arts, who looks the part but one of the warmest humans alive.

Che “Tee-Mann” Guvera and Kaota “The Sailor” Puna
The MMA community had it’s fair representation, sans the faces from the capital city and it was a very warm cosy weigh to say the least. Head official Chris Easley briefed the gathering on the rules and everyone was brimming with enthusiasm. For the star of the show, even though he is not fighting- the Snowman was full of praise for Hextreme events for their hospitality. When asked on whether he will fight E. Fedor the great on a possible M-1 card in February, he was in the affirmative. “Yeah, it looks a go- and I can’t wait to have a shot at what most call the best guy out there. It’s a good possibility at the moment but we will get this fight soon I hope!, first time when I was supposed to fight him it didn’t happen but this time the possibility is great, and I am very excited!”, we can’t wait and I hold my breath as this is written. Judging by his clean shaven head, with his HEADBLADE razor, the fight purse and ratings will be no doubt as big as his biceps. Massive!

The stage set in the shape of a hexagon; we should see a night of epic proportions unfold. Even if you are not there in person SKY Sports ONE will be LIVE to go, so all comers from all corners right around the country will see the drama as it unfolds. Although we miss the snowflakes and a white Christmas here in Auckland, the hexagon along with the “Snowman” will mean that X’mas would have come early, and let’s hope for a Santa Clause like Knock Out fest to fill the stockings full of presents.
